So how does one join a server?

I installed the Origins Launcher and then installed the mod and battleye through the launcher. I tried to connect to about 30 different servers. I either get a black screen with "waiting for host" or "you were kicked from the server". What's changed? I never had this difficulty with any earlier versions. I also removed all startup parameters from within Steam.
